The theme for the grand parades of Aruba’s Carnival in 2020 of ‘Dushi Carnival Group’ is ‘Secrets of the Savana’. For Carnival 2020 the group announced their new musical band of ‘Upgrade Music’.

Section: Dogon tribe of Mali

They say that Africa is the poorest continent in the world. This may be right when seen on news how many in Africa are suffering. Nevertheless at the same time Africa can be considered one of the richest in world when considering its flora, fauna and culture. A great variety in unique and wild animals, an incredible ecosystem and above all a great ethnic wealth. There are many tribes with each their own beliefs and rituals, ways and rules bound by African rich culture. Masks are part of the African culture with multiple significations and uses in the tribes. Some significations and symbolizations in these masks are ancient finding their uses in religious cult as part of ceremonial costumes. A true form of art with materials like leather, woven wood, clay, metals and more. Tribal masks in African culture generally have a spiritual and/ or religious meaning that are used in social events and rituals. Masks represent the spirits of ancestors that control the forces of good and evil.

Andy Mendez choose the Dogon tribe of Mali as theme for his section. He says that in this tribe different costumes and masks are used for different dances. It it in this way that Andy presents:

Shoulderpiece Goddess of the Dogon by Arnalda Lampe. This dance was performed in a particular ritual where the goddess appeared completely naked in order to connect with the spirits.

Bodyroad Honoring the Exotic Birds of Africa by Andy Mendez that won the Carnival Champion Bodyroad. The Dogon tribe used different bird as sacrificial animals in mystical rituals.

Bodypiece The African Dancer by Oscar Tromp. Oscar represents the dancer that began it all in Africa.

Section: Aruba Doet

Aruba Doet every year with this great initiative to grant our hendenan special the opportunity to participate in Carnival. For 2020 Aruba Doet and the joyful group of these special participants have joined the Dushi Carnival group and have won the prize for Carnival Best Incentive.

History: Dushi Carnival Group

For the 55th Aruba Carnival in 2009 the brothers Aldrick and Hilward Croes (r.i.p.) amongst other family members and friends founded the ‘Dushi Carnival Group’ born out of the musical band of ‘Dushi Band’ which was owned by Hildward himself. This group had its own style especially in the music animation by their first houseband ‘Dushi Band’.
